EDF ENERGY birmingham
half marathon
Tuesday 26 August
Last night it was chucking it down with rain and Tim and I went out for a 40 min run, and we both loved it; I never thought I would love running in the cold and wet, but it was refreshing and actually one of the best runs I have done so far. I felt fit and my blister has really started to heel, which has made a big difference to my pace and the length of time I can run. I received some great advise from Tim Hutchings regarding my blister, as I was getting concerned it was hindering my running and training plan, but now it all seems to be going well and the running is really paying off. I have really noticed my breathing over the longer distances has started to regulate much earlier on during my run and I am now learning to breath through my nose and out through my mouth, which has helped in preventing getting a stitch.
I went to visit the race site during the week and it really got me motivated, as I started to imagine myself running through the city and picture the streets lined with supporters, it should be a great event to run and also support. Being my first visit to Birmingham, I have realised I need to do a bit more hill work, as living on the south coast we have lots of great places to run, but the terrain is very flat and after finding out the Birmingham was built on hills, I have taken this into account and my run tonight is taking me over some of the bridges in my local area, to help prepare.
Next on the training plan for Tim and I tonight is the start of our interval training which is a 5 minutes warm up, then 5 repetitions of 2 minutes hard running and 2 minutes easy running (20 minutes), followed by 5 minutes cool down = 30 minutes total, which I have read, improves running pace and efficiency and improves race times, but avoids the fatigue and muscle soreness of long race running, so going to give it a go and will let you know how we get on.
Kerry Dunbar from EDF Energy is running the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon on 26 October. It will be her first ever half marathon and she'll be sharing her training highs and lows over the next few weeks in the official Birmingham Half Marathon blog.
