EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon '08 - Race against climate change

How fantastic was that! My first half marathon and it won’t be my last. It’s still the topic of conversation with everyone talking about it and also everyone who ran being asked if they are still aching.

It was everything I thought it would be and more. Well done Birmingham, you really did yourself proud and thank you to all the supporters that lined the streets of the route, you truly spurred me on and your support was awesome.

So I made it around the 13.1 mile route and I have to say, it was more challenging then I thought it would be, due to there being quite a few hills. We had incorporated some hills into our training but we still both found the course really tough. We still managed to do ourselves proud with Tim completing the run in 1.45 and I did it just under 2 hours with 1 hour & 59 minutes. How close was that, at least I can still say I made it under 2 hours, even if it was by just a minute!

The tips we received helped us on race day, like eating right the night before, meaning we went into the race feeling fully prepared and ready. It was so great to see all the runners lined up at the start, waiting to set off, everyone was in such good spirits and people were really motivating in helping to keep other runners going during race. I particularly loved the vocal talents of people chanting under the
underpasses, this was very uplifting and made me smile.

I hope you all had as good a run as we did and completed the race. I am now looking forward to a chilled out week with no exercise and some unhealthy eating, I think it’s a curry tonight!

Hope to see you next year and I also hope we have inspired others to give it a go. What a great challenge to set yourself and I am so pleased I can say I did it!

Kerry Dunbar from EDF Energy is running the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon on 26 October. It will be her first ever half marathon and she'll be sharing her training highs and lows over the next few weeks in the official Birmingham Half Marathon blog.
