Beginner Schedule – Energy Savers
- Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need
- At night, pull the curtains to reduce heat being lost through windows
- Turning the thermostat down by just 1° may cut as much as 10% off your heating bill
- Given the extra running kit you will be washing, consider drying your clothes on a clothes line outside or a rack rather than a tumble drier as this will save energy.
Also, remenber there are washing powders that work well at lower temperatures.
- Turn appliances off at the wall rather than leaving them on ‘stand-by’ will save you money. For example: Video players may use up to 85% of the energy they use when switched on when left on standby; dishwashers left ‘on’ at the end of their cycle consume up to70% of the power used when they are running and washing machines use 20%.
- Run training may require you to wash more than before – shower in preference to bathing as this saves both water and energy if you do not stay too long in the shower.
- Run to or from work, or get off the bus or train a stop or two early and walk or run the rest of the way. This will help contribute to your training schedule and may reduce your carbon footprint.
- Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly to keep them running efficiently and cheaply – if they frost up quickly, check the door seal. If your fridge is next to a cooker or boiler, leave a good gap between them.
- Only using your dishwasher when it is full could save you up to £15 a year.
