Half Marathon Organisers Search for Volunteers

The first ever EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon will be staged on Sunday 26 October and the organisers, Birmingham City Council, are looking for hundreds of volunteers to help out at the event.

The 13.1 mile run, which is sponsored by EDF Energy, one of the UK’s largest energy providers, will be also known as the Race Against Climate Change and will start at the Birmingham Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr and will finish on Broad Street near Centenary Square.

Volunteers will be required in both of these key locations to help get runners to the start line and also to help hand out medals and water as runners cross the finish line. They will also be required along the route to staff water stations to help keep the thousands of runners taking part hydrated.

Organisers believe that the staffing of water stations could be a role which would be particularly well suited to organisations such as local companies, charities or even Girl Guide and Scout groups as team work is essential to ensure smooth operation.

Race marshals will also be needed along the route which passes through New Town, the city centre near both the cathedral and Town Hall and Edgbaston. Other roles are also available and most do not require any volunteering experience or knowledge of road races as a full briefing and training will be provided. Individual volunteers need to be at least 16 years old but the event organisers are looking for people of all ages and from all communities.

Stephen Jones from Quniton, who is planning to be a volunteer at the event, has helped out at several sports events in the city in recent years and explained why: “Volunteering is great opportunity to be part of major events in the city. I’ve really enjoyed the events I’ve worked on in the past and it is so rewarding to help other people achieve their goals. I’m really looking forward to the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon.”

Councillor Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “This is going to be a fantastic event for Birmingham and it is an event for the whole city so even if you don’t feel up to the challenge of running a half marathon you can still be an important part of it by becoming an official volunteer. Hundreds of people of all ages and from all backgrounds are needed to help out and ensure that this event is a huge success.”

Sally Jacobs, Sponsorship & PR Manager from EDF Energy said: “We are delighted to be involved in an event in Birmingham that is bringing so many people from the city together. The Race Against Climate Change has caught the imagination of our own employees and a number will be supporting the event both by running and also volunteering”.
