Organisers Release Training Plans for the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon

To coincide with the 12 week countdown to the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon, organisers of the inaugural event have called on the expertise of Olympian Tim Hutchings to put together training plans to help runners prepare for the big event.

Sunday 3 August will be a key date in the diary for the 4,200 runners who have already signed up for the event and for those thinking of taking part, as it marks 12 weeks to go until the first ever EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon, which is also known as the ‘Race Against Climate Change’.

The event will be staged on Sunday 26 October and experts believe that 12 weeks to go is when the serious training should start to ensure that you are fit enough and fully prepared to run the 13.1 mile course.

With this in mind Birmingham City Council, who are organising the event have teamed up with Tim Hutchings, to provide runners with some valuable training tips and detailed plans which they can follow to ensure they get their training right, whatever their running ability.

Tim, who came fourth in the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games 5000m and twice won silver at the World Cross Country Championships has also coached athletes to Olympic standard, believes that one of the first things that runners need to do before taking on a challenge like this is be realistic about their ambitions.

Tim said: “Runners need to make sure they are aware of what their body is capable of so if you are very unfit, then be realistic and aim to just ‘get round’ and if you’re overweight then see your doctor for a check-up before starting. However, if you are finding your training easy then step up to the next level.”

The training plans, which have been written by Tim, are now available to download from the official EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon website “www.birminghamhalfmarathon.com“http://www.birminghamhalfmarathon.com. These plans have been put together for runners of different abilities including beginners, intermediates and advanced and six week plans are also available for runners in all three categories.

In Birmingham there are also plenty of training venues for local people to make the most of. There are a huge selection of Birmingham City Council leisure centres and swimming pools across the city and Birmingham has more parks and open spaces than any other city in Europe, all of which are great locations for training for the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon.

The 13.1 mile run, which is sponsored by EDF Energy, one of the UK’s largest energy providers, will start at the Birmingham Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr with the finish line on Broad Street near Centenary Square. Anyone aged 17 or over on race day can enter.

More than 4,200 people have already signed up to take part in the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon and if you haven’t already entered then you can do so now at “www.birminghamhalfmarathon.com“http://www.birminghamhalfmarathon.com or call 0844 888 3883 for more information.

The EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon is organised by Birmingham City Council, sponsored by EDF Energy and supported by 100.7 heart fm, the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa FC, Birmingham City FC and the Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust.
